Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital in Orange Honors Community Christian Students

Throughout the school year Kevin Trinkle, a representative of the hospital and the Partners in Education Program spoke to the elementary students during their chapel on character traits. Community Christian School was honored by Memorial Hermann’s Partners in Education Program who selected around 50 students to spend a few hours at the hospital where they made crafts and delivered them to patients and staff. Jarren Garrett, Chief Administrative Officer spoke to the students on the medical profession, as well as good health habits. They were served pizza, cookies, and drinks for lunch. Band of Sisters

Plagued by the flu, respiratory infections, strep throat, high fevers, and fatigue, a “band of sisters” from Community Christian School made their way to the Regional Basketball Championship game in Houston this past weekend. Throughout the school week, the entire team, save two students, missed class due to their illnesses. Practices to prepare for this final 8 match were limited due to the illnesses that infected this important basketball week. The outcome of Saturday’s game seemed obvious, but this strong willed basketball team would not go down without a fight. The Community Lion’s opponent, Spring Providence Classical, quickly sprang ahead to a 29 to 7 half time lead. The lady lions headed to locker room fatigued, barely able to breathe, and throwing up. It was looking like this half healthy team would have to throw in the towel, in lieu of putting their health further at risk. The head coach came out of the locker team to inform the referees that his girls might not be able to return to the court. No sooner were the words out of his mouth when he heard the sound of the door opening behind him; this “band of sisters” marched back on the court to face their opponents.

Despite their failing bodies, they went on to hold their opponents to only 8 points in the second half. In the end, they lost the game 37 to 14, however, it isn’t winning or losing that defines that moment. These girls played the game with all of their heart and left no regrets. The Community lady lions have been characterized all season by playing their hardest with honor and character. It was this drive that won them the titles of District Champs and Regional Champs. On this fateful Saturday, their state playoff run fell short, but not unnoticed by those who watched on. One witness to this game was the president of TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) who said to one of the girls, “I have never seen a team, boys or girls in any sport, compete with such honor and character as these girls did today.” He went on to give each one of the girls a special medal embossed with the words “Competition with Honor.” This sisterhood didn’t bring home the state trophy, but they won something even greater Saturday. They displayed great character in the midst of tough circumstances, and this group of girls will always be able to look back on this day and realize they can do anything they put their mind to. Before the game, the girl’s main goal was to be known for their hustle and character. This “band of sisters” did just that on Saturday, leaving a great legacy for future Community lions.

Enjoying their very first apple!

When Justin Hayes recently shared during chapel services at Community Christian School about his role in orphan care in Uganda, many student’s eyes and hearts were opened to the needs of kids half way around the world who are just like them, well almost.  The children under the care of Parental Care Ministries in Uganda, Africa now have the privilege of going to school every day, where they receive love, education, and hot meals while there.  Many of the children Justin spoke about are orphans, but they are also children with similar needs and wants as children in America.  These Uganda children love to sing songs, play games, and go to school.  Though they desire these things, they also lack many of the resources that we take for granted daily, like running water, electricity, hot meals, shoes, desks, and parental love, just to name a few.  As Justin shared about the needs and the joys experienced by this group of children, he shared one story about a group of orphans who had never eaten an apple before.  When asked what one child wanted for Christmas, the child simple replied, “I would like an apple for Christmas.”  When American children ask for an apple, they are asking for an Apple iPad, iPod, or a Macbook.  What a contrast between the children of these two worlds! This story touched the hearts of the children at Community Christian School in such a way that they decided to raise money to purchase apples for some of the orphans in Uganda.  These children set up a bulletin board in the hall to remind them of their goal and quickly raised $230+ for the children of Parental Care Ministries.  On a recent trip to Uganda, a team member from Parental Care USA, based out of Tyler, Texas, where Justin Hayes serves as Director of Ministry Operations, was able to deliver the apples to children at their Ibanda and Mbara schools.  For many of the children, this was the first apple they had ever eaten.  These grateful children did not waste a single bite of the apple and ate even the core, with the seeds being the only remaining part of the apple.  What a blessing for the children of Community to provide and share in this humble experience with these children thousands of miles away. This act of kindness brought smiles to the faces of everyone involved! Read the entire Parental Care story online, see more pictures, and discover how you can help these children by visiting their website atwww.parentalcareministries.org/wordpress. Additional stories about the contributions of the children of Community Christian School impacting their community and world are available online at www.ccsorange.org/news.html.

Community Christian School Taking on the Challenge

In January the students of Community Christian School were given a very special challenge: Rachel’s Challenge. Rachel Joy Scott was the first student killed in the Columbine shooting and has left everyone with a simple challenge: “If one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” With this challenge the students of CCS have started a Chain Reaction Club and had a Chain Reaction Week where each day was dedicated to acts of kindness. Each class was given a stack of paper strips and each day the students wrote down on a strip of paper an act of kindness that was done for them. The school will put the chain together and have a parade at the end of the month. Monday was “Are you ‘Red’dy for the Challenge?” and the students discussed how they could show acts of kindness. Tuesday was “Mix Up Day” where the students sat with other students they normally wouldn’t sit with during lunch and discuss different topics and interests. Wednesday was “I’m Stuck On You Day” where students wrote kind messages for others on sticky notes and stuck them on a kindness board. Thursday was “IEU Day” (I Encourage You) where the students wrote encouraging notes to students they felt needed encouragement. Friday was “ARK Day” (Acts of Random Kindness) and the students all got together to make goody bags with a special note and over the weekend went out and gave them to random people who have served them. Before Rachel Scott was killed at Columbine she had traced her hands on the back of her dresser (her father will find this some time after she was killed) and she wrote inside these hands “These hands belong to Rachel Joy Scott and will some day touch millions of people’s hearts.” Rachel Joy Scott has definitely touched the hearts of Community Christian school.

Community Christian School Students Rally to Help Family

Community Christian School’s Student Leadership Institute’s director, Judy Klein, saw a need in a former student of hers and CCS graduate, Ryan McLeod. You may have seen their story in the news this past week. Ryan McLeod, now a Beaumont firefighter, has a four year old son, Racer, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Because of the severity of his illness, Racer is in need of a diabetic alert dog. The students at Community Christian School recently went through Rachel’s Challenge and through the testimony of Rachel Scott, learned that “if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” Based on Rachel’s Challenge, the students of CCS have started a Chain Reaction club and are implementing the challenge in their chapel and Student Leadership Institute program. This week the entire school is having a “Chain Reaction” week where each day they are focusing on a different act of kindness. Mrs. Klein, as part of the Chain Reaction, wanted to show an act of kindness toward the McLeod family. She presented the need of the McLeod family to the student body during their chapel and they rallied together to raise money throughout one week to help with the purchase of the diabetic alert dog. The students were impacted by the need of the little four year boy and raised $1, 500.00. Together with the money raised by Community Christian School and the money raised by the community and surrounding areas at the benefit at Precision Autobody in Nederland on Saturday, February 11, the McLeod family now has the money to receive a diabetic alert dog for Racer. The CCS family is so blessed to be a small part of helping Racer McLeod.
